I think a useful comparison would be between fidelity's zero fund and the "equivalent" non-zero fidelity fund. In July 2019, I put equal amounts of money in FXAIX and FZROX as a bit of an experiment. As of today, FXAIX is up 41.35% and FZROX is up 38.89%. However, FXAIX pays dividends quarterly while FZROX only pays once at the end of the year.
