Not possible through normal means. I don't like it either, Dovahkiin goes where he/she pleases. Once upon a time one of the Stones of Barenziah was in the actual building (Elenwen's Solar), so if you missed it, it was impossible to get back. It’s honestly such a bore to make a checklist for them, this mod is a godsend. nono the religious mod is wintersun, Currently going for 100% for the second time. This is not an option (ps4).As frustrating as it is, i do recomend going to some of those cleared locations (or look at a video guide to see exactly where some stones are, and if you remember picking them up). Also, the stone in the thalmor embassy is a pain to get if you miss it the first time, but you can go back into the cave, its just not a location on the map.

After you locate a stone and have Vex identify it any later stones you collect can be counted 2-5 times if you spam the button as fast as you can during collection. So instead of tracking down 23 stones after identifying the first(24th stone) you might only need 10 or so.
