Zadar is smaller and weather, especially winds and rain, in these parts can be worse than in Split. Traveling to Plitvice from Zagreb is just about 20-30 minutes longer than from Zadar. You can also do a day trip from Zagreb to coast with a car. To Rijeka is approximately 2 hour drive and to Zadar 3 hour drive.Nova get consistently good ratings on this forum. I was impressed when I used them, but have also been happy with Oryx, Enterprise and Avis. Not too sure about your question about the ferry.
