Marlin 39a serial number dates.

I have a 39A that i got from my father-in law. I was trying to find out the manufacture date, but the first character of the serial number is odd. (see attached image). It looks like it could be a D or a P, but it is missing part of the letter. It does not look like the missing part has worn off, it looks like it was never there.Thank you for the addition to your group and forum. I've been curious for quite sometime now about this rifle as it's Serial # HS186 predates the earliest known high pressure designed Mod.39 by several hundred pieces according to the information in the Marlin Firearms book by William S. Brophy.That is a good question. According to a sheet, that gives production numbers made each year, for each Model 39A made from 1952 to 1975. According to your gun, someone miscounted. Or one of the other special runs, used the same serial numbers. Even though I could swear they were kept separate.The model 39 (Not 39A/39M) was made from 1922-1938. With a 4 digit ser # your going to be on the low end of those dates. Since you rifle does not have the HS prefix on the serial number it means it will not take the high speed .22 long rifle cartridges. Here a example of what it might be worth depending on condition of course.I have a Marlin Model 39 or 39A with a serial number of 427168. I believe it is a Model 39A first model, except I can find nothing to validate the serial number and also, in all the pictures I have looked at, checking on the forend and butt stock grip. Without a manufacturing date, all I can do is guess. I did find one online Marlin search site and it indicated that all Marlin 39's with an S prefix were made in 1958 - 59. Boxhead mac. They began "manufacturing" it in 1938 (some say late 37) for "release" to the public in 1939.
