I do nothing but Legend Dares if I play this activity. On that note, it's worth GRINDING, for high stat armor drops, weapons, cosmetics you can no longer get otherwise, and upgrade materials. The activity ITSELF rewards cosmetics, with activity-related currency rewarding MORE cosmetics. Special events don't HAVE to involve Bright Dust purchases.
Honestly, when you are bored just use destiny companion app and run DOE on legend. Its mind numbingly easy, you get a guaranteed red border, and you get like 2-3 keys if you get lucky and more with lightning round. Make sure you grab the 300K bounty from Xur. Farming normal dares IMO i found it wasnt worth it. 3.Boss died and xur/horse never spawned. The score is all bugged too. Three games in a row and there's no score in the bottom right corner. Can't complete bounties because of this. And can't get Pinnacle drop for 250,000. I've been able to get the pinnacle for that, but just no loot at the end.
It kinda depends on the platform you're on.
