2004 New X-Men isn't a sequel to the Morrison run. It just mixes that group of students with the New(-er) Mutants (the one with Surge, Prodigy, etc.), it's not "essential" but it's pretty similar in spirit to the (not so) New Mutants (the one with Dani Moonstar, Warlock, etc.) and Generation X (the Lobdell one) so it's worth reading, I think.
