You have to push the carrier release each time. However, it should extract shell from chamber every time, and not double feed. May be a problem there.
I pattern tested my Ithaca 51 12ga tonight. I shot a reload of 7/8 ounce of #6 at 1200 fps. The 26" IC barrel put 134 of 218 pellets (hand counted) in a 30 inch circle at 40 yards for 61%.
