ZEN357. 236 posts · Joined 2018. #7 · Jun 4, 2019 (Edited) Yes, the lower intake will need replaced. I bought the aluminum elbows seperately at Advance Auto Parts. I bought my upper and lower off eBay, it included the Dorman gaskets and the EGR tube. The EGR valve I bought seperately as well.
coolant is leaking into crankcase dilemma i have a 99 regal gs with 280,000 miles. i lose about a gallon of coolant a week that goes into the engine. thought it was a head gasket or the heads so had the heads checked and put on new head gaskets with new torque to yield bolts . also replaced the aluminum lower intake manifold. coolant still goes into the engine. had a combustion gas test done ...I did use the more expensive Felpro LIM gasket with the aluminum frame. Dunno if that's normal, but I don't think it is. I'm, going to take a straight edge to the LIM and the cylinder heads tomorrow, and by wednesday, hopefully, I'll be finished up. I'd do it in a day or so but I have to work. :icon_cry: I'm going back with the metal LIM gaskets. As for the UIM gasket, I'll stick with the basic felpro one, lol.The only real downfall to the 3100/3400 motor was GM's retarded idea of using nylon/silicone for the intake gaskets, which were inevitably prone to failure. When the LIM gasket goes, depending on how bad the sepage is into the block, it can either lock up the motor, or the coolant destroys the bearings, leading to a spun bearing.

Pan is steel, and looks to be held on by a frame between bolts and the pan itself. Up top, looks like it's also coming from the valley seal for the LIM. Coming from the corner nearest firewall on front side of motor, and making it's way down. Seems straight forward enough, oe LIM gaskets are a well known weak point on the 3800.

I took the UIM off and have taken all the bolts of the LIM out but I cannot get it to break loose. I have tapped it with a rubber mallet and used a prybar under the thermostat area.
If the gaskets are leaking externally, change them NOW!!! Bar's Leaks will be worse than nothing since it's giving a false sense of security. Also, it won't work with the design of the LIM gaskets. Folks have tried, and purchased themselves another 3800 as a result.
