Upon install of a fresh main battery, the start/stop system began working essentially all the time and has been doing so for the past 1.5 years. Point being, I don't think the change in operation can be interpreted to mean any one specific thing. As the batteries age there will be less time that they reach the threshold to enable start/stop.

I'm going to assume the ESS/Aux battery is dead.It is highly possible that the fuel system was failed to start, but the Stop/Start lacks of fuel system detection. So the engine could not start.
