The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. Actually 4 books (Shadow of the Torturer, Claw of the Conciliator, Sword of the Lictor, and The Citadel of the Autarch), but its the peak of fantasy/sci-fi, IMO. Much more dense and rewarding than most of the standard sc-fi and fantasy authors you regularly see on this sub.

I discovered Joe Abercrombie last year, blitzed through the First Law trilogy, immediately read the first two books of the new trilogy then realised he wrote three books between them!
